1. Wood is harvested and is shipped to a factory, but the lead is not harvested, it is created by a mixture of graphite and clay. If the company adds more graphite, the lead is softer and breaks easier. The eraser is created from synthetic rubber.
2. The pencils parts are then shipped to a factory. Molds are cut and the lead is inserted into the mold to fit the desired size. The lead is then put into the wooden part of the pencil, and steel is used to bind the eraser to the pencil.
3. The pencil is then shipped out to stores, purchased and then used.
4. The pencil is used until it is up to the eraser, then it is thrown away. Eventually the wood and eraser will decompose. The steel and lead will not. Alternatively, the pencil is taken to an incinerator and burned away.
